This summer, KCS joined sister choir, the Windward Choral Society (WCS), under the name Nā Pu‘ukani, on a tour of Kyoto and Tokyo, Japan. The name, Nā Pu‘ukani, means, “The sweet voiced singers and merry music makers,” which was gifted to the combined touring choir by Kumu Hula Ka‘anohi Aipa, who sings with WCS.
Paul Lam, founder of Perform International, had these words to say about the tour:
“Congratulations to Susan McCreary Duprey, artistic director of two outstanding Hawaiian choirs, the Kona and Windward Choral Societies, on wonderful performances in Kyoto and Tokyo.
Featuring Japanese singers alongside their American counterparts, the concerts warmed the hearts of Japanese audiences, underscoring and further strengthening the connection, friendship and love that have long existed between our communities.
Japan holds a special place in my heart, as does Hawai’i and I’m thrilled that these concerts are the first in a series of spectacular events that Perform International will be presenting in Japan leading up to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.”
